2025 in film is an overview of events, including award ceremonies, festivals, a list of country- and genre-specific lists of films released, and notable deaths. Shochiku and Gaumont will celebrate their 130th anniversaries; 20th Century Studios and Republic Pictures will celebrate their 90th anniversaries; and Studio Ghibli will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's first musical film The Broadway Melody (1929), known for being the first sound film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, enters the public domain this year.

In addition to new releases, popular films The Sound of Music (1965), Babe (1995), Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Madagascar, , Brokeback Mountain (all 2005), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Jaws, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (all 1975) will be re-released theatrically to celebrate their anniversaries.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

- Ne Zha 2 became the 57th film to gross $1 billion worldwide, the seventh film to gross $2 billion worldwide, the third-fastest film to cross the billion-dollar mark at 12 days, the second-fastest to gross the $2 billion mark.
- It surpassed The Battle at Lake Changjin to become the highest-grossing Chinese film and the highest-grossing non-English film.[11] It became the highest-grossing animated film of all time as well as the 5th highest-grossing film overall.[12]
- It surpassed Inside Out 2 (2024) as the highest-grossing animated film,[13] breaking Disney's 14-year streak with the title after regaining it with Toy Story 3 (2010). Doing so, Enlight Pictures became the first non-Hollywood studio to hold this distinction.[14]
- It surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) as the highest-grossing non-Disney animated film of all time, and the first film since Shrek 2 (2004) not to be distributed by Universal Pictures to hold the milestone.
- It became the 57th film to gross $1 billion worldwide and the 14th animated film to do so.
- It became the first Chinese and the first non-English film to gross $1 billion and $2 billion worldwide.[15]
- It surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film ever in a single market.[16] It also became the first film to earn $1 billion and $2 billion in a single market.[15]
- On March 2nd, 33 days after release, Ne Zha 2 surpassed $2 billion, the first animated film in history to do so. It is the seventh film overall to achieve this milestone.[17]
- It also became the first film in history to exceed $2 billion worldwide without also grossing at least $600 million within North America.
- The Fengshen Cinematic Universe became the first Chinese and the first non-English film franchise to gross $2 billion with the release of Ne Zha 2.
- A Minecraft Movie achieved the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation in the US, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023).[18]
- The Detective Chinatown franchise grossed over $1.5 billion with the release of Detective Chinatown 1900.
Other records
- Multiple PG-rated films had their best first-day ticket pre-sales this year, including A Minecraft Movie, Snow White, Dog Man, and the US release of Paddington in Peru.[19]
- Lilo & Stitch became the number 2 best first-day ticket pre-seller for a Disney live-action remake, behind The Lion King (2019).[20]
